Clairvaux

Clairvaux

The aim of the programmatic project is to work with what's already there. This constitutes a history in its own right, revealing the potential for reconversion and reversibility, as evidenced by the way it has been used over the years, and in particular the Grand Cloister's use as a prison during the Abbey's fourth chapter (1808-1970).

In keeping with this architecture of transformation, future interventions would be more closely integrated into the existing building envelope. It's not a question of demolishing what's already there, but of deconstructing it. And all this with the aim of reducing the carbon footprint that would be generated by such undertakings/operations. This balance between the layers of time and the interventions of the 21st century, offers a play between actions and reactions, between revelations and intuitions.
